C. Organism Characteristics – properties of organism used in classification.
a. For bacteria – cell wall type, shape and grouping of cells, colony morphology,
relevant growth requirements (like oxygen level, temperature), etc
b. For viruses – Capsid morphology, enveloped or not, type of genetic material
and replication used, etc
c. For eukaryotes – see Ch. 12 – Fungi (Hyphae, spores, different forms?),
Protozoa- (how do they move, different forms?), Helminths- (Type of worm
and their characteristics like nematodes having digestive system, etc)
D. Medically relevant toxins, proteins and/or lifecycle characteristics – See textbooks
a. Where does the organism normally live (its reservoir) and for eukaryotes a
general overview of its lifecycle
b. What special parts of the organism make it cause disease in humans– special
toxins (Give specific name if applicable), flagella, enzymes that alter
environment, proteins that let them enter cells, etc…
